Your First Step

Every big change starts with a small first step.

When making a big decision, it's tempting to look for a big catalyst; some powerful and defining moment. But if you look carefully or closely enough you may find that the very beginning was really something small. A thought, a moment of introspection, a willingness to listen, a change in perspective.

This is the real first step.

It is important to remember this, for several reasons (and I'm making a concerted effort to avoid cliche's - you're welcome):

1. Usually, a successful big change is really a series of small incremental steps.

2. By the time you have gone to seek professional help from a coach or trainer, you have already taken several small steps toward big change . Often people come to a life coach or to health professional saying "I don't know how to change" or "I don't know where to start" ... you already have - remember that!

3. While a grand plan that consists of big steps or multiple leaps is ambitious, this is exhausting as well as likely to set you up for failure. Each step forward needs to be attainable and while it is good to stretch yourself here and there (leaps certainly have their place), sometimes you just need to give yourself a break. Remember that big steps come with bigger risks. On the other hand, small steps are achievable and have a lower risk portfolio.

4. The path to change is different for everyone, even if the goals are the same, the starting block and the first step itself is different for every individual.

In reflecting back on big changes in my life, it was not a big bold move that I consider to be my first step. Rather, it was the small step of finally listening to that inner voice shouting out for change. It was a willingness to reevaluate and trust myself and to go back to what I intrinsically knew.

So what's the point? Well if you have come to this site, or if you have sought the assistance from a professional, you are more than likely a few steps into your journey toward sustainable change!

Congratulations you are well on your way!
