Harvesting Healthy Habits

5 Easy Steps To Positive Change

Nobody is perfect and we can all stand to improve ourselves. After all isn't the best part of life the striving for more and for better. Whether you are looking to make changes in terms of your psychological wellbeing, your mindset, your physical health your spiritual health or your social connections. When approaching change it may seem overwhelming or too big to tackle. So to help you along, here are five easy steps to make sure that you achieve your goals.

1. Start Small

Change can feel overwhelming. So setting high expectations for yourself may make it more difficult to feel in control of your journey. Take on one thing each day. Set small achievable goals so that you set yourself up for success.

2. Consistency/Repetition is key

Make sure you work toward your goals every day. Even though your steps seem small, the fact that you continue moving forward is more important. Keep the momentum. When you start with a new activity keep it up. Repetition will help you turn a new action into a new habit. Once a behaviour becomes habitual your mental load reduces and you can build on a solid foundation.

3. Make use of relevant tools

You are on a journey to self development. It is a long process so lighten the load on yourself. Make things easier for yourself by using tools and resources available to you. Diary, planner, lists, reminders, call a friend, ask the audience, make a note, leave sticky notes all over your home. Whatever it is that will help you, USE IT!

4. Take an active approach

Get actively involved in making changes. No one is going to turn things around for you. You need to accept and react to the responsibility for your life and your goals. Being actively involved in your own change also means being consciously aware of your own actions. Living consciously, in the present will help you maintain your focus rather than reverting into old destructive habits.

5. Monitor and evaluate

Make time at regular intervals for comprehensive monitoring and evaluation. Take time to reflect on what you have achieved so far and to recognised your achievements. Identify what worked and what didn't work. Identify obstacles and think about how they can be addressed more effectively. Based on this evaluation you adjust your plans and goals so you can move forward and continue to push yourself toward self-development.
