The phrase "fake it till you make it" is more often said as a joke or in passing but is there something more to it? Its a broad suggestion that people usually only half-mean when they advise others. But maybe there's something to value in this common dictum.
Just on its face it, faking it it till you make it requires confidence, boldness, daring, along with a positive outlook.
As an idea, the phrase appears in a variety of forms.
"think good and it will be good" - R' M M Schneershon
"Act like a king to be treated as one" - Robert Greene
"See things that you want as already yours" - Rhonda Byrne
"Stand up with your shoulders straight' - Jordan Peterson
"If you will it, it is no dream" - Theodore Herzl
Clearly there is something to this.
In fact one could argue that it is the foundational tenet of positive psychology.
Either way, it is an important idea to keep in mind on a daily basis. It reminds you that you can take control. It reminds you to believe in yourself. It reminds you to set a positive framework for yourself.
Starting a new role, or taking on something new? Fake it till you make it! Approach with confidence and learn by doing.
Feeling nervous in social situations?Act like the king (or queen) you are. Obviously don't be snooty about it. But present yourself with dignity and grace, and expect others to treat you the same.
Nervous about your future? See things that you want as already yours. The unwritten part of this is that you need to know specifically what you want. You need to think hard and plan so you can visualise positive future outcomes.
And in every day and in every situation ' think good and it will be good". It doesn't hurt to have a positive outlook... in fact it just might help.
But if you find you are still struggling to find a good outlook and a positive perspective, it is ok and actually necessary to reach out and ask for help. a friend, a psychologist, a social worker, or even a holistic life-coach
