Cleaning your way to mental wellness

Minimalism is all the latest rage but is there more to the physical action of cleaning, clearing, sorting and organising? Is there truth to the saying that a "decluttered space creates a decluttered mind"?

I'm currently in progress of my annual cleaning. Knee deep in cleaning and dusting and sorting and organising: once I overcame the feeling of being utterly overwhelmed I got to the knittygritty. After some time and intense cleaning, I started to make headway the almost immediate response is a sense of relief. It happens every time.

The process of cleaning itself, engaging in a mindless task, allows your mind space to wander and allow thoughts to easily flow in and out. It gives you the time to work out situations, interactions, or problems that you may be experiencing. It gives you the space to have quiet and seek order.

Having completed the task at hand I always feel a sense of zen and structure. A knowing that despite the chaos there is yet possiblity of order and focus. No matter how chaotic life and the work around us may seem, focus on a small basic task, take one step at a time and see how with just a bit of time, order overtakes the chaos.

Interestingly there is some research, albeit not much, to back this up. Check out these articles about the relationship between physical organisation and wellbeing. Happy reading, and happy cleaning and I hope it brings you som zen
